Greetings!

Check out what’s happening on the Church Librarians Network this week.

Selection: Appropriateness

Ann Lancaster asked a question on Friday that many if not most of us deal with often. She is asking about the appropriateness of a specific book for the collection. From your experience, how would you respond to Ann’s question? For those who have library teams, perhaps you have run in to the complications when team members differ with varying opinions about appropriateness. Let’s give each other permission here to express our varying opinions about this book and a growing number of books that are grappling with the struggles of our society today. Do we need to consider generational differences over such topics? Are there dangers to not engaging these very difficult topics? Click here to read Ann’s question. Collection Development: What about Single Adults?

While continuing to connect the Q&A posts with categories, I discovered a post (June 23, 2015) that is right on target for many of your church families today too. Sadly, one of the most ignored affinity groups continues to be single adults. Martha Jo Dendinger asked about how to classify Christian Living items for single adults. Just yesterday we had four single college students visit the Enrichment Center for the first time. One of them was interested in a specific book on dating. She was most impressed when she discovered we had it. I was too! Let’s join the conversation here.

Collection Development: Biographies for teens and young adults

Last Wednesday I got to meet with your youth ministers. Our high school minister immediately started identifying topics/subject areas of interest for our youth and young adults as we refresh this part of our collection. Biographies were on the top of her list. Back in June 2017, Martha Jo asked for recommendations for biographies for this audience. Let’s revisit this question. Click on Reply to share your recommendations here.

Can’t wait to see what I find as I continue to connect the Q&A posts with categories this week.

May God bless your week and keep all of us safe,
