Where to put books for single people is a great question, and looking at my own catalog, I see room for improvement in my classification. I think I've decided to use 306.73, since it includes subjects such as dating, celbacy and courtship. Most important to me is to be consistent in using the subject heading "single people."
Interesting how we all use difference numbering approaches. I have been using 306.73, Institutions Pertaining to Relations of the Sexes (per Classification System for Church Libraries). 306 overall is Culture and Institutions; 306.81 is Marriage, 306.875 is blended families. 306.73 is General Sexual Relations including celibacy, courtship, permarital sexual relations, adultery, AND dating. I felt singleness fit well overall into 306.73, as it is often discussed in terms of celibrary, courtship, and dating. However, if it was more about Christian Living and Spiritual Growth of a person who happens to be single, I would consider classifying it in 248.4, 248.84, 248.842, or 248.843, wherever it fits best.
A young single adult asked if we had a book on dating. She had a specific one in mind: Single Dating Engaged Married: Navigating Life and Love in the Modern Age. Published in 2017. Surprising both us, we had the book! The classification of this book suggests another point about classifying Christian Living items for adults. We classified it 241.4 (Christian Ethics.Virtures). But this book might be better with 241.66 (sexual ethics). We are also in the process of organizing our shelves by target audience. We already have all the parenting books in one place with signage, but still have the Dewey classifications we had before. We need an area for single adults.
Thanks, Eva. I use 248.842 for Christian living, men and 248.843 for Christian living, women. I was hoping that one had been developed for single living since we have so many requests and the 248 section is huge.
Thank you, Eva Nell. Do you include books for single men within the 248.842 section and those for single women within the 248.843 section, or have all items for singles in 248.4?

That makes sense. Some books sure do drive me nuts on best classification. I can stew for way too long on a single book!
That's awesome! It's what I call a "God-thing". When the right book finds its way into the right hands.
It was a God-thing on many levels. Just having college students come in our EC on busy Sundays is a blessing.
