I CAN READ BOOKS

I have come across a great variety of children's I CAN READ BOOKS for Level 1 & 2 readers.  Some of the series include:  books by Jan & Mike Berenstain (Neighbor in Need); Zonderkids Made by God series; and VeggieTales (Case of Missing Patience) stories by Karen Poth.  The eager readers are excited about going to the designated basket entitled "I CAN READ" books set aside for their reading level.  Anything that we can do to encourage good reading for youngsters is always rewarding.  Pricing is reasonable.  Enjoy!

  • Is level 1 & 2 the same as grade level 1 & 2?

    • William, it is not the same! The levels in I Can Read Books are based on simplicity/complexity of words, font size, amount of words per page, etc. It is not meant to fit into a grade level, but instead be matched to whatever reading level the child is currently.

That being said, a great way to assess the "grade level" of a book is to go to the Accelerated Reader Bookfinder page and type in the title of the book. When you get the results you will see the letters "BL" in the description, followed by a number. If the number is 1.2, then that means first grade, month 2. In that way, 4.7 would mean fourth grade, month 7.

Once again, these are just guidelines, but I have found them to pretty accurately portray the reading level for children in those grades. I use it as a starting point to help children find books in their grade level.

      • Thank you.  You've given me something I believe I can work with.

  • Thank you.  I just developed a section for our children's collection in which I feature Early Readers & code it by 3 different colored spine labels.  I'll need to look into your suggestions.
