Tribute to Older Womedn

Our little library is planning a tribute for our older ladies, many of whom are widows.  We are thinking along the lines of a "Spa Day" with a Tea, some sort of short program, etc.  Anyone out there got any more suggestions, or ideas on how to perfect this?  We really do have some wonderful little ladies in our church!

  • How about featuring books with older women as central characters? Some widely varying suggestions: [FICTION] Elizabeth Goudge's A Bird in the Tree, Pigrim's Inn, and The Heart of the Family (trilogy) and At The Scent of Water (stand-alone); Jamie Langston Turner's Suncatchers, and Winter Birds (not related, though Suncatchers is the first book in her main series); Agatha Christie's Miss Marple mysteries; the Grace Chapel Inn books (Guideposts series with various authors); Marvin Olasky's Scimitar's Edge; Karen Kingsbury's A Time to Dance and A Time to Embrace; Kristen Heitzmann's Freefall; and probably many more that I can't think of at the moment!

Also biographies of women like Corrie Ten Boom, Amy Carmichael, Elizabeth Prentiss, Fanny Crosby, Gladys Aylward, Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong, Edith Schaeffer, etc.-- ladies who served God faithfully even into old age.

Also books on specific interests older ladies would have, like mentoring, or special gifts/skills that particular individuals you know use to serve the church.

Sounds like a great idea for a library event!

  • Why not get some ladies in your church to do their hair and give them a pedi and mani.  I think they would enjoy this.  Maybe have some stores provide a fashion show and some help with make up for older ladies.  Could you get some donations from people for special treats for them, maybe some gifts.  Restaurants might give you free gift cards for them.  I think you have a wonderful idea and I for one would like to try to borrow it for my ladies.  You sound like a very caring person and I like your idea of service to those who have served before and now need us to serve them.

    • Thanks, Rita, for the encouragement!  That is just what we were thinking--a "spa day" kinda/sorta.  We're going to have a retired missionary from our area speak from Titus' gospel about older women mentoring younger women, etc. ; then a heavy tea and a little spa time--principally nails, as they might not want anyone messing with their hairdos, we're warned!  Our gift will be a small bag filled with manicure tools, lotions, etc.  There will be notes gathered from younger women in the church, telling of the blessings these treasured ladies have been in their lves.  Since this is a library sponsored event, we'll display some books that we think they might be interested in, too.  As we move through it, we're really getting excited about doing this for them!  Thanks again!!

    • Ann,

I love the foot soaking idea!  I'd like to work that in, if we can have the time.  Thanks so much--this gruop is the greatest!
