We have biography series but only a few history books for 3-5 graders. Any recommendations? I have a very frustrated 5th grade girl waiting for us to meet her interests! HELP!

  • My son (reads at a fourth grade level) really enjoys the I Survived series. I have been pre-reading them before passing them along and find them engaging, informative, and so far I haven't come across any questionable subject matter. I also wouldn't discount the American Girl series books. I LOVED them as a child. There are newer editions and newer series that I haven't read, so I can only vouch for the ones published in the 90s.

Notgrass is a Christian history curriculum that uses literature alongside their history studies. Their book lists are great:

  • We have almost all of the series that Debbie mentioned.  I was glad to see her endorsement of the Chosen Daughters series, one I've been thinking about adding. It it means I'll have to take something off the shelf, but her comment helps to ease the pain of doing so.

    • I guess it depends what you have to eliminate - but I do think these books are great.  I am particularly partial to Dr. Oma (my grandchildren call me Oma - I'm Dutch) - but all of the ones I've read have been so interesting.  They are about people I've never heard of, but who were real people, and when I've searched for them on-line afterwards, sure enough, I've found information about them.  Beautiful covers, too!

  • you may want to look at the "I survived" series by Lauren Tarshis. the kids love them!

  • Daughters of the Faith series

A Life of Faith: Kathleen McKenzie Series

Chosen Daughters series (I HIGHLY recommend these)

    The American Adventure series

    Trailblazer books

    Liberty Letters series

    Sisters in Time series

    Immigrants' Chronicles

Patricia M. St. John's books - not specifically historical but might be a really good fit

The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare

All-of-a-Kind Family series by  Sidney Taylor -  Not Christian but wonderful historical fiction about a Jewish family living in NYC
