Classifying Children's Bible stories

I am automating my church library collection and trying to make the classifications more accurate as I go.  My questions concern children's Bible story picture books. I know that generally, OT & NT  Bible stories retold go under 220.95, OT Bible stories go under 221.95 and NT stories go under 225.95.  I have placed picture books of OT persons at 221.92 (Bible story retellings of Noah, Moses, Jacob, Joseph, etc.)  Is this correct?  The  retelling of creation, I  have placed at 221.95, or is 222.1 more appropriate?  Now for the retelling stories of Jesus' life.  I have placed these at 232.9 and 232.92 and others.  Should the Bible stories such as The Boy Who Shared His Lunch go under Miracles at 232.955, 226.7 or just be lumped at 225.95?   He Remembered to say Thank You (Luke 17; 11-19 for children)--should this be 232.954 or 225.95?  Should retellings of parables go under 225.95 or at 226.8?  I have some picture books of The Lord's Prayer.   Do those go at 226.96?  The more I do, the more confused I get!   Any advice is appreciated.   Thanks!

  • This is the information given in the Classification and Cataloging Section of the Church Library Ministry Information Service, c2004, Broadman & Holman Publishers.  This section was compiled by Eva Nell Hunter.

"Bible stories--Bible stories are the retelling of biblical events in the words of the writer.  They fall into the C and J sections and are given the number 220.95 when two or more stories are from both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

A single or collection of Bible stories from the Old Testament are classifed 221.95, while New Testament stories are classified 225.95.  Note: When a book contains portions of the Bible using Bible words and is illustrated for children, it is not a Bible story.  It should be classified with the portion of the Bible from which the text was taken."

I hope this helps.  I think you started out on the right track!  It really depends on how the book is written, as the previous paragraphs indicate.  Good luck!  PS...quick, make a reservation and come to the Equipping Church Librarians for Ministry conference at Ridgecrest, NC this weekend, March 18 - 20.  Lots of great conferences and over 200 librarians to meet and learn from!
