Cataloging Question for ResourceMate users

For those of you using ResourceMate,  which "Resource Type" do you use for audio books on compact discs?  The compact disc category is geered for music CDs and doesn't seem to fit an audio book.  How do you process the books on CD?  And, for the call number, do you use CD as the top number for both music CDs and audio book CDs?  Thanks for any advice.

  • Janice, we use ResourceMate.  Yes, you can add new resource types and change the fields as needed.  I did that when I was experimenting with eBooks.  We don't have many audio books, but I would recommend using some sort of system to delineate the music from the audio books as others have suggested.  Do you need help with adding a resource type?  I can send along some general steps...
    • Sandra, Buford & Melanie,

I was able to add a resource type.  Thanks for your helpful advice!

      • That's great! Congratulations!  Does ResourceMate have a good "Help" menu?  I find that many questions about our software can be answered by the help files included in the program.

And, in reply to the comments by Buford and Melanie, it is so true that we need to identify the different material types -- especially the difference between the BluRay and regular DVD and CD types which look alike but  have different equipment needs!  We need to make it as easy as we can for our library users and for ourselves!

Tip for the day:  Prepare a Processing Procedures Manual which will illustrate how to process all of the different material types.  An easy way to do this is to actually place a processed item (CD, DVD, etc.) on the copy machine and copy both the inside and outside of the case to show where the labels are placed and where you write on the disc (with permanent fine point marker).  This is a good training tool and reminder for how to process those items which we may not do very often.

  • Can you add a material type (or resource type)?

In conferences on C&C or in Processing Media, it has been suggested that "audio books"  (AB) or "books on compact disc" (BCD) be used as the top line for audio books on compact disc.

In our library, we use BCD as the top line and shelve them separately from the other CDs, which might be music or perhaps even sermons.  (What else would you have on CD?) To begin with, we had books on tape (BT), now books on CD; I have made the statement that if we were beginning again, I would probably use "AB" for audio books.  Who knows what we will have next!

We also use the next accession number or item id, instead of prefixing the accession number with a format indicator such as BCD45.  We use Concourse, but the process is the same, because it is a processing procedure, and your software will probably let you address the issue.

    • >>>Who knows what we will have next!

Well, we already have Blu-ray video. And there is MP3 (actually a compression techique) used for music and audio books on CDs that require special equipment.   Shelve the MP3 audio books with the CDs and we'll be getting complaints when they don't work on a patron's CD player.

      Ain't progress wonderful!
