  • We had a great spring conference here in Lynchburg, VA this past weekend. Morlee Maynard and Carolyn Walker from LifeWay and Allison Maynard from Book Systems along with some of our own members did a great job leading the conference.  We learned all about Disciple Making Centers and how to take that back to our own libraries to put it into action both personally and within the ministries of the church.

We had 42 people to attend, representing 30 churches but we also out of those numbers had 11 new people who have never attended a library conference before. We had people not only from VA but NC, PA, OH, TN and GA. It was great to see such excitement about church library work and all the new friendships that were being made.

If you weren't there you truly missed a great conference and weekend of learning.  Mark your calendars for the Fall Conference, November 9 &10, 2018, Libraries: Diamonds in our Midst. in Richmond, VA.  Information is under the events tab as well as our website www.vacla.org and our Facebook page Virginia Church Library Association.

  • Just got my papers from the Lodge, so I guess that means I am officially accepted as a VCLA member?  Hope so.  Anyway, will find a photo that shows my good side, and post it??  Or send to somebody??  Anyway, glad to join.  Did not know this organization existed until Kathy, church secretary, put the flier on my podium.  I think it came from MTBA office, but not sure.  Have a few pics of our (library)/classroom.  Will bring to conference.  Ya'll have a blessed day now.....Ron.....

  • We are excited to have added the group Big Island Bluegrass as the entertainment for our 60th Anniversary Kickoff Celebration on Saturday night.  You won't want to miss this great conference and enjoy a fun evening after a day of learning.

As a reminder VCLA 2018 membership dues are due by March 15 in order to be included in this years membership directory.  Information can be found on our website www.vacla.org under the membership tab.

Also the early registration discount fee ends on March 31.  The program fee will increase to $60 for everyone starting April 1.

  • VCLA is pleased to announce that we are going to be offering again for the Spring Conference scholarships for first-time conference attendees.  The scholarships are intended to bring church library workers to our conference for training and networking.  This will also introduce them to everything VCLA has to offer.  Financial assistance is available to help offset some of the conference cost.  The scholarship application and all of the details, can be found on page 5 of our Spring Newsletter.   The deadline to apply for the scholarship is March 1, 2018.

  • Fall Conference Highlights

We had a successful fall conference thanks to our great conference leaders Carolyn Walker, Hope Ferguson, Allison Maynard and Karen Jones.  We had 53 people registered who represented 32 churches from 6 different states and 15 of those were new who have never attended a VCLA conference before. These are some exciting numbers considering what we are hearing from other states. We welcome all of the new people and especially our new members to VCLA.

We had a book collection for the hurricane victims at the conference for those who would like to contribute. We asked each person to bring one new children’s book if they would like participate. As of today we have collected 167 books for all ages. We are working to get these books shipped to the Houston area. We have been in contact with one of our other church librarians there in Houston who is going to help with the distribution of these books.

VCLA members be on the lookout for a new newsletters in the coming months. This newsletter will be in addition to the spring and fall newsletter. Details are still being worked out but this newsletter will feature new releases for all ages for books, DVD’s and more. This newsletter will be another benefit for being a member.

Mark your calendars for our 2018 conferences. April 13-15, 2018 is our Spring Conference, Disciple Making Through Your Church Library, at Eagle Eyrie Conference Center, Lynchburg, VA.  The Fall Conference is November 9-10, 2018 at Monument Heights Baptist Church, Richmond, VA.
Look for more information in the coming months from the Anniversary Committee as we celebrate our 60th Year in 2018.

Let's talk Book Clubs and Reading Groups

On October 21, 2023 while we are together in Richmond, we are going to share our experiences and ideas about book clubs. I thought it would be fun to continue to share our stories beyond the conference. So I am setting up a forum for our conversations going forward about our book clubs and reading groups so that I can put the link in our handout. Can't wait to be with all of you on Zoom. Surely do wish I could be with you in person! Morlee
