Hello, I am the volunteer librarian at St. Michael Lutheran Church and School in Portage, Michigan. We have a collection of about 8,000 books, three-fourths of which are children's books used by the students in our private K-8 school. I began helping in the library when we enrolled our son in fifth grade at the school in 2014, the same year we moved to Portage and joined the church. About two years ago, I turned my attention to the church books, which had been neglected since 2004. I did significant weeding and then consolidated the collection to the corner of the library nearest the church narthex. After the improvements I began having the library open every Sunday from 9:30 to 11 a..m. between church services. Nevertheless, generating the congregation's interest in using the library has been slow. Most often those who stop in want to ask how to give me all their dusty old books! So the library's newest improvement, now ongoing, has been to improve the library's space for sorting, storing, and processing books to be added to the collection. I hope to share with the Church Librarians Network more of our library's story, including images.
