I realize that my church has a lot of children in the nursery and preschool. Probably more than we have in the 12 grades. Many of the books in our youth fiction section were purchased in the 70's. I need to update the youth section before all these children become readers. I would appreciate some help on what is trending for children and youth fiction. Where do I go for guidance? Thank you Ruth Groves
Hi, our church is working at updating our children and YA section. For guidance, we have used Redeemer Reader (redeemedreader.com), Read Aloud Revival (readaloudrevival.com) and Triple Crown Awards, awards for National Christian School Association (triplecrownawards.org). Series that are popular right now is Adventures in Odyssey Imagination Station series, Dead Sea Squirrel by Narowski and The Prince Warriors by Shirer. Graphic novel are very popular right now - we recommend Kingstone Comics (Kingstonecomics.com) and the works of Ben Avery and Ben Hatke as well as The Action Bible. For YA I like to look at the yearly YA Christy award (christyawards, com). Hope this helps!
Some authors we have who have written for young adults, and who seem to be fairly popular:
Robin JOnes Gunn
Krista McGee (dystopian)
Donita K. Paul
Jenny B. Jones
Morgan Busse (Skyworld series)
The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson has just rereleased with different artwork. I had 5 or 6 different teenagers rotating through them at once when I first got them, boys and girls. I also highly recommend Chuck Black. He does a fantastic job writing engaging fiction with a biblical outlook. Jenny Cotes is another good one I have many kids reading right now. If you look her up, she has a good amount of books and my teenagers here love them! The epic order of the seven is her biggest series.
Hope that is of some help to you!
