Due to increased participant travel expenses and the loss of funding by those entities that have provided library conferences in the past, the number of conferences in most of our locations are greatly reduced or nonexistent these days. BTW, the same is true for all ministries. If someone planned a conference within driving range for you, which topic sessions would you choose?

  • Attendance, even in other non-profit organizations, is down. I would be interested in figuring out how to convince members and elders, deacons, ministers to re-start a library taken away after a remodel. I've also been involed with closed churches who had extensive libraries, and only a few, of many books, were taken to be used in other church libraries.

    • Paul, will you be at the PNACL conference in Olympia this month?  I would love to meet you.  I'm giving a workshop on Leaving a Library Legacy which addresses setting policies and involving other ministries in a way that help keep your library alive (or perhaps resurface).  I hope to see you there.

      • I don't know if this will get to you this way or not.
I don't know if I can get to PNCLA or not yet. Haven't looked into it yet.
I've only been to one chapter meeting, since joining the Facebook page 6 years ago; south sound chapter.
I was librarian for the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Enumclaw for 10 years, and a deacon for 3. I've since married and am now attending University Place Presbyterian Church, which had a library but it's gone now. I haven't inquired to find out anything about it--but might now that things are a bit less busy. email is trescott@umich.edu.

        • Thanks Paul for your quick response - I will communicate with you a little more via email.

  • Excellent question!  The Pacific Northwest Association of Church Libraries (PNACL) did a survey on the same question.  The opportunity to meet local authors is a big draw for me, plus the opportunity to discuss issues and solutions with other librarians.  Each year a different chapter plans the conference.  We might be offering a conference with more fun and less education next year.
