On palm Sunday we put up a display in the library with all the books and videos of the season. The table was draped in purple cloth and beside the books was a representation of Golgatha with the three crosses. Attached is a picture.
I agree with Debbie. I just took over this library and am trying to move it from a forgotten place to an active, vital ministry of our church and beyond.
The hardest part of keeping it active is weeding it! Give away or throw away ratty or faded items and replace with new books, either donated or purchased, as soon as possible. Get more people involved - have a "Library Work Day" and ask people for just a donation of time to clean books, mend, etc., with no further commitment. I have found that 10 - noon usually works well. I arrive at 9 to sent up and sort out tasks and materials. Often folks who are already volunteering in other positions will come out and help for a "one time" task.
Ask single senior folks who are newer to the church family - they usually have time and really enjoy working with others, and often need your invitation to feel welcome! After the first time they will often respond for other small tasks or as substitute helpers for your regular team. I have found the "get your feet wet" approach works better than asking for a weekly or monthly commitment right off the bat, and you can determine if they are a "good fit" for your library team. I hope these ideas help - the more people you involve, the more they will spread the word!
At the beginning of Lent we put books which might be useful for Lent reading on our "featured items" bookcase. They haven't been used as much as I had hoped, but I do believe some have gone out. We are a Baptist church, so the idea of Lent is fairly foreign to most of our people!
We also store all our kids' Easter books and DVD's throughout the year, and put them out around the same time - beginning of Lent.
That's really all we have done so far. We took over this library a little over a year ago and are still very busy trying to get things to where we want them to be.
