weeding/continuing education

I have been a volunteer at the public library off and on for several years. I am familiar with library work. I have just been elected Church Librarian. The previous librarian has it in her blood--Jr High lib for 30 years and church librarian  for at least 10 years. She has passed on a wealth of knowledge to me but our non-fiction section is outdated but it is the only material we have on some subjects--foundation of the church, missions, and others. I would like to get some new materials but we are bursting at the seams.

Also, I would like to expand my knowledge with continuiing education. Can you suggest anything for this?                   Carolyn

  • OK, it sounds like you have a huge task ahead of you to tend to weeding the books.  Is the former librarian still part of your committee that you have this issue to deal with?  If not, you can move ahead.  Consider the task of weeding as if you are going to clean out your closets for spring cleaning.  I would suggest that your carve out half of the outdated books at this time and see how your shelves look afterwards.  Do you have a good budget or a means to receive monetary donations?  DON"T ask for book donations or your just going to get more of the same outdated materials.  Don't accept any books during your tendure prior to 10-15 years unless it is a classic or Christian historical book.  A guide for reference materials is that it should be a large percentage of your collection along with books that reflect your denomination.  William Barclay's commentaries are our biggest reference resource.  Want other ideas?

There is a correspondence course that is available through Churh & Synogogue Association (CSLA) based in Oregon.  They offer a nice course to help you through the main points of handling a church library.  The organization is open to all.  Need more information on this?  Peace
