Well, i have a BIG QUESTION about WEBOPAC and security. i have a trial version of webopac installed so that those staff within the church can get onto it. HOWEVER, our IT guys are not enthusiastic about having my computer left on all the time, and being open to the internet once it is installed for security(i.e.hacking) reasons. Apparently without putting me on a server farm with my own DNS address? my computer could be hacked, and they could get into the network for the church or take down the website. They are quite nervous and unsure about what to do or what others have done. What have others done about security on the net?

Pray!!! And call Book Systems and ask for their best WebOpac / Internet guy. Ask him to write a letter for you to show to the staff and IT people explaining exactly how the system should be set up. It is totally necessary to have a static IP address. Then when it finally came about, our IT man called Book Systems to talk and ask questions about the set up. I was very impressed with his calling and glad for the patience of Book Systems technical support in spending the time to answer his questions.
I'm not exactly sure how ours was finally handled, but our WebOpac is up and running ---most of the time! You have my utmost empathy!
Where are you- How do your IT people handle it? Are you networked with the church or do you have a stand alone IP address separate from them? It's such a good program, and I want it so badly- just to get more people interested in what we've got, but this obstacle has to be overcome. I've talked to Shea at Book Systems, and he is quite knowledgeable. But the long and the short of it is that if I leave my machine on so that others can access the catalog someone can hack into the whole enchilada. What I need to hear is how other churches have handled this program . I need some IT evidence, and testimonials.
