Themes

Marcia asks the following:

For our summer reading theme "FACEbooks"  we're displaying books(mostly biographies) with people's faces on the book.  We recently displayed HERstories about women.  I'm always looking for theme ideas.

Thanks,

Marcia

  • Marcia, these are some of my themes since 1999

Hike to New Heights with Summer Reading Fun (mountain climbing theme)  Get Wild With Summer Reading Fun (jungle theme)  It's all Fun and Games with Summer Reading (games and puzzles theme--used 2x)  Fly High with Summer Reading Fun (kite theme--used 2x)  Get on Board with Summer Reading Fun (train theme)  Scoop up Summer Reading Fun (ice cream theme--used 2x)  Good Old-Fashioned Summer Reading Fun (log cabin theme) Get Carried Away with Summer Reading Fun (hot air balloons) It's a Mystery! with Summer Reading Fun (detective agency theme)  Blast Off with Summer Reading Fun (space)  Travel the World with Summer Reading Fun (international theme)  Let's see, I've used a bug theme, oceans x2, fishing, construction.

So l have done this for 28 years. Just come up with a theme you can pair decor and prizes and fun jingles with and books to promote.  The year l did an animal theme l gave bonus points for animal stories.

My theme is always a secret until the decor goes up, known only to me and my helpers.  Have fun.

  • Our theme the year is Travel through History with Summer Reading Fun. We are using a patriotic theme. I last used a patriotic theme in 2001 which was Star Spangled Summer Reading Fun. I saved borders and clings and various other USA decor.  Our Early Bird gets the Gummi Worms sign up was last Sunday and this coming.  I had 30 kids sign up so far. They can get a jump start on reading before the official start on 6-7.  Bonus points will be given for reading historical fiction set in America and nonfiction books on the USA. We haven't decorated yet. I can put up pictures after the 7th.

  • This year, our summer reading program is called "All About Books!"
We created booklets for three age groups (Preschool; K-2 and 3-6) and a bookmark for teens and adults.

The booklets have 16 assignments  - like, "read a book with a red cover" - "read a fantasy" - "read a biography" - "read a book from a bottom shelf" - etc, and then also have an assignment (age-appropriate) which must be completed, usually answering a question or two or three, or drawing a picture (for the youngest ones) - that kind of thing.

The teen/adult bookmark has printed on it some number of categories (16? I think?) of books to read, but no assignments - we let them off easy!
