  • Our library has been directly over the 50 year old boiler for our church.  I tried to keep the temperature at 73-74 degrees.  We now have a new boiler directly under our library room.  I again keep the temp at 73 even though the new boiler does not give off as much heat.  With the 2000 renovations to our church building, it was approved to have a separate air conditioning unit for the library as the heat, of course, was strongest in the winter!  I have not had the deterioration of the books, spines and tape that I had originally.  Good luck.

  • What did we ever do before 'Google' came along?!  I found that a library should not be warmer than 70 degrees; humidity level should be around 35%.

    • Great answer from Google, but we do have our library a little warmer than 70 degrees when we are working and having people in!

But I wanted to tell you about a resource about library space and furnishings which you can download and print free!

Click on the equip tab on the red line at the top of the page, scroll down on the first page to the CLM Administration: Space and Furnishings section; click on it and look at the READ/CONFERENCE section of this equip process.  There are two books mentioned, the first Church Library Ministry Information Service is available from LifeWay ($19.99) but the second, Church Library Space, Furnishings  and Interior Design can be downloaded by clicking on it.

Both of these resources will answer many questions that we have as we are managing our church library ministries.

      • Good information!  Thanks so much.
