Subject Headings

We are in the process of putting our books on computer. Is it a good idea to update the subject headings to reflect current usage? In a lot of instances the ones that come up on the MARC record are different from the ones used years ago. We no longer put cards in the card catalog and it will eventually be removed from the library. My goal is to have an online catalog and it seems that is should be as up-to-date as possible.Another question I have is about books given in memory or in honor of someone. Do most libraries give the patron a record that can be used for income tax purposes?I would appreciate any input that anyone has.

  • The families and friends who give a donation to the church library in honor or memory of a loved one give it to the church and desigate it to the library. That takes care of the tax donation.

  • We do not give the doner of a memorial a letter because they received something for the gift. They would not receive a tax letter for a gift of flowers, etc. The book was a gift in honor of a person's life.

We have our library on line and love it. It is very easy to correct subjects now and I know you will enjoy doing this as time progresses.

    • I believe it would be best if the tax question were asked of the church financial office or tax advisor, but, as an example, if the donor gave a monetary gift to the church designated to the library, they would receive credit for that gift for tax purposes. If a book or other item is given directly to the library, we might ask if they would like a "receipt" or acknowlegement of the If they do, it should be given to them.
