Storage for books on CD

The boxes that our books on CD come in are a mess - torn, crushed, 'ratty' looking.  Does any one have a good solution to storing them?  I'm looking at plastic cases that come with several 'sleeves' inside.  But, am finding they are pricey.  Any suggestions?

  • We have chosen to purchase the disc binders with plastic rings (in contrast to the metal rings).  The rings are larger and we can place more sleeves in them.  The cases with the fixed sleeves are not as versatile as those with the rings.  Rarely do you get a book with exactly four CDs in it!

I did look at the online catalog where we normally purchase the cases and the prices have gone up since we last purchased them.  It may be that we purchased from a sale catalog, because my invoice shows that we purchased several of each type that we ordered.

Even though it adds several dollars to the processing cost, the cases are sturdy and will protect the CDs better. We think it is worth the investment.

We cut the box graphics and slide them into the case sleeve.  Sometimes we place a piece of black construction paper behind the graphics if it is a thin sheet, or doesn't fit the sleeve as well as we would like.  Before we place it in the sleeve,  we place library ownership on the item, place the spine label in the same place as books, and barcode if you use those.  We have a section in which we shelve them in the same way we shelve books. We catalog the book on cd  (BCD) just as we would a book.  Our call number for a fiction book by Terri Blackstock would be    1st line:   BCD      2nd line:   F     3rd line:    Bla

If it is #1 in a series the 4th line would consist of the first three letters of the series title and "01" added to that.

I know this is more than you asked for, but maybe the complete explanation will be beneficial to someone else who is just getting started processing Books on CD.  (you might use "AB" for audio books if you think there will be other formats coming along!  :)

  • That's what I would do- put them in the good plastic cases with the sleeves.  I would color copy the cover and just transfer it over.   I know it's pricey.  The other option is to go to Staples or somewhere like that, and buy boxes of jewel cases, and rubber band them together.  That sounds really lame, doesn't it.
