Re Labeling (Classifying) the AV Section.

When I began in the church library non-book items were listed as AV on the spines.  Since I had worked at a public library I had wanted to go to DVD, CD, etc.  Many not such a good idea because now the CDs come in between the Children's Bio and Fiction when I run an inventory.  I still want a narrower assignment rather than just AVs.  I did see on World Cat where one library had the first line as AV and then the next line as CD or DVD.  Any ideas?

  • We have been using BCD for books on CD in order to separate them from CDs which are, most of the time, music.  If I were beginning now, I would probably use "AB" for "audio books" since there are MP3 versions as well as the regular formats.  Otherwise, I agree with Eva Nell's answer -- she and I have discussed this several times!  :)

  • We just use DVD and CD, with the following qualifiers: for DVD's which are not movies but are educational or instructional in nature, we use INS DVD. For CD's which are non-fiction books, we NONF CD. For any DVD's or CD's which are for kids, we use J CD or J DVD.

As far as the letters which follow the DVD or CD designation: for DVD's it's the first three letters of the title, so for example Sue Thomas, FBEye would be DVD SUE. For CD's, it's the first three letters of the author's name, just like with any other book in the collection.
