We had 2 men in our church build bookcases for us out of good lumber, stain them and install them to fit perfectly in our area.As Denise said they cost a whole lot less and you can get exactly what you want and need.
We have not been happy with the shelving we have purchased in the past because they tend to be too deep and very costly. Recently, we received a donation and wanted to use the money wisely, so we asked a gentleman in our church to make them for us. Not only did it cost a third as much for materials, but he also measured the corner and end caps already there, so the bookcases are actually built to fit the space we have.

Often your county library system will have surplus they are trying to get rid of.
