OPEN LIBRARY

Do you have any specific questions? Are you starting a new library? Or reviving a library? Or stepping into an already together library? . . . .

Well, our small church library is both open in the sense that anyone at anytime can check out items AND our collections are in unlocked rooms. We still use cards for check-out & then put the cards into a filing box. Although it's recommended to automate your library, we haven't just quite reached that point, but hope to someday. A sister church of ours simply uses a check-out sheet & then the librarian enters the information into the computer.

Physical Space: We just moved from a smaller building into a larger building, and yet do not have a room that's used only as a library room. In fact, we have one room that is called the Library Room, but also functions as a meeting room. We also have part of our library collection in 2 Sunday School rooms.

Open Library Times: Due to our physical space, we are "open" all the time. People know where to put the check-out cards & their returned items. Right now it's just myself, another librarian and my 2 girls who are looking after the library. I hope to soon set-up with "junior" librarians who will assist with shelving & generally keeping order & maybe more as they have interest.

Is any of this along the lines of what you're asking????

Like the others replying I would need to know more of what you mean by open library in order to help more effectively.

What do you mean by open library? is it open all the time? or the actual room not separated?
