Middle School Age Boys

Our collection could use improvement in the area of middle school age children. In recent purchases, we ordered several items geared toward middle school age girls. What are your recommendations for boys in all areas (Fiction, Non-Fiction, Movies, etc.) Thanks in advance for any advice shared

  • The suggestions by Teresa sound great. I was logging on to suggest some of the Bryan Davis books; I believe he has a new series, too. Some other good suggestions for this age group are on the J and Student mediagraphies on the church library website at www.lifeway.com/churchlibrary. Look on the right hand side of your screen for the age group mediagraphies. Check out all of the lists of suggested media for different ages and also the list for special needs. There are some great suggestions on the lists that have been provided for us.
    • Check out Hunter Brown and the Secret Shadow. The Codebearers Series was developed by the creative brother team of Christopher & Allan Miller. The Miller brothers have had the distinct privilege of growing up in a CBA Bookstore. As children they learned first hand the value of faith-based stories while helping their parents operate several Christian bookstores and book clubs for 30 years. As a result, they founded Lumination Studios, a creative house that is geared toward developing stories of faith and fantasy for families everywhere. Their focus is to create properties that boys will especially love to read and watch. http://www.codebearers.com/

I have also heard of The Dopple Ganger series. Mischievous identical twins Sadie and Saskia Dopple live in the same orphanage as their only friend, Erik Ganger. When wealthy Muzz Elliott adopts Saskia, Muzz's own twin plots against her. Saskia tries to foil the crime as Sadie and Erik search for Saskia. Taylor's exciting "illustra-novel" combines graphic format with traditional text. Ages 8 to 12. 288 pages, hardcover from Tyndale by G.P. Taylor. CBD had mixed reviews of this book. I would be curious to what others think. I have not read it but I like the idea of including more illustrations alternating with text to appeal to reluctant readers.

My son has The Lion Graphic Bible by Jeff Anderson & Mike Maddox that he really enjoys.
      Product Description
The energy and visual excitement of the graphic novel is matched with the power and passion of the Bible narrative.
The Bible is a unique narrative of origins and cosmic powers, of the ageless battle between good and evil, of human potential and human treachery—the very stuff of the graphic novel. This award-winning book presents the entire span of the Bible in a dramatic visual style to enthrall a new generation of readers.

      • Thanks to all for all the suggestion. My electronic communication has had some hick ups this year. I am about to do my end of year order so I am going to investigate your suggestions soon. Thanks again.
  • Becky there are some really good christian series out there for middle school boys. The boys at our church that like fantasy have enjoyed the Dragons in Our Midst series by Bryan Davis along with the prequel series, Oracle of Fire. There is also the Wormling series by Jerry Jenkins and Chris Fabry. Recently I purchased a series called Passages by Paul MCusker that has lots of great reviews by readers and I am eager to get it on our shelves.

Some funny series are the Misadventures of Willie Plummet by Paul Buchana and Rod Randall. Also don't forget the Incredible Worlds of Wally McDoogle by Bill Myers. For the guys that like sports check out these series: Spirit of the Game by Todd Hafer and Game On by Stephen Smith and Lisa Caldwell.

Wayne Thomas Batson's pirate series that starts with Isle of Swords is really an exciting read.

You might also try the 2:52 series by Rick Osborne and Ed Strauss that includes things titles such as: Creepy Creatures & Bizarre Beasts from the Bible, Bible Wars and Weapons, Weird and Gross Bible Stuff. That last title flies off our shelf all the time.

Hope some of these suggestions will be helpful to you.
    • Thanks, sounds like a good place to start.
