We have discussed the Desk Book in the past. Click here to find some ideas for organizing and what to include in a Desk Book. This relates to the idea of being prepared when someone suddenly steps away from the library team. The free book Church Library Ministry Information Service includes a great list of topics to include in a Desk Book.

What would you do today to develop a Desk Bookfor your church's library?

  • I've been working on one, off and on (more off than on, unfortunately), for our library.  I've been putting in information like (in no particular order):

    * detailed information how to catalog & label books - this includes descriptions of every different type of spine label we use (ie, historical, mystery, etc) including the ones we create ourselves (for example Good Read, Animal Story,  Pastor Pick, etc) and also master copies of each of those.

    * our library's purpose and mission statements

    * where we get supplies; what kinds of supplies we keep on hand

    * descriptions of all our reading programs, along with master copies of documents used

    * where we buy books and how we go about selection

I'm sure there's more but right now that's what is coming to mind.
