  • I asked if anyone had experience using regular invisible tape to protect spine labels and everyone was against it. Although I agree that regular protectors are best, I used the office type invisible tape to protect a small library at my retirement home. It's been about a year and it seems to work ok.

But, I don't suggest using the office type tape. Well, maybe while waiting for delivery of the real thing.

  • I have used the Demo Label protectors as shown on Pages 8 & 9 of the 2013 Demco book.  Our library is directly above the church's boiler so when the air conditioning isn't running, the room can be hot and dry.  I have used the labels for about 5 years and haven't had one ounce of trouble.  I used the labels for DVD spines mainly (as I used the high quality Scotch tape for paperbacks and dust jackets for hard cover books).  I get the individual boxes as they are the easiest to use.  Page 8 gives you the options.  I suggest the "Matte" type as there is no reflection of the label underneath.  Good luck.

    • I don't use Scotch tape.  If spine labels are big enough to see, (and they have to be large at retirement homes!), you would spent too much time tearing off two or three lengths to cover each label.  Stick :) with Demco or Gaylord labels!  Bev is right!!!  Save money by buying one size (big ones).  They can be cut in half when you need smaller ones for magazine label protectors, etc.

In my email reply to you, I forgot I wasn't on librarything.com and used Phanouria, my sign in name. Sorry for the confusion!

  • Years ago someone I know used "scotch" tape  to cover spine labels.  The tape yellowed and cracked.  Stick with the label protectors you can buy from a library supply store, such as Demco.  You can't afford to buy cheap tape.

    • I've seen old glossy tape yellow and crack. I thought that the newer invisible tape might not have this problem. A Scotch ad didn't make any claims about long life. Anyone have experience with how the invisible tape performs in the long run?
