How do we ??

My other question is this.

How do you bring the church library out of the "dark ages" into the "information age" ?

We are on our church's website, we check out books by using the computer, we have a library kiosk where patrons can find out what is available in the library, is there anything else that we should be doing?

We are a very large church. If you want to "check us out" go to

www.churchatthemall.com

  • Did you consider a children's reading program.  Most churches have a summer reading program for the kids.  I kick of my children's reading program in the Fall as continue it through the year.  Look into the catalog called UpStart.  It has lots of promotion materials that are attractive and appeal to kids. Ir is not a christmas based promotion catalog, but I adapt the featured theme with awarding every 10 books read by the children with a small Christian prize.  website is upstartpromotions.com  or phone # 1-800-448-4887 for a catalog.  I do all my ordering on-line.  Last year we had a theme of adding toppings to a pizza and this year is "Be a Smart Cookie" and add cookies to the cookie jar.  Kids love it.

  • In addition to other's suggestions, maybe a newsletter sent via email and/or available for download on your church webpage.  Also, look at providing a list or a link to free non-copyright protected eBooks for those younger folks with tablets/eReaders.

    • Dear Melanie,

Thanks for the suggestions. We do have a newsletter on our website and also paper copies made for those who do not have a computer. We also place newsletters in strategic spots in the church.

I don't know much about ebooks so will have to check into it when I get a chance.

      Thanks again!

      Janet.

  • Are you on facebook, can you renew on-line, can you reserve media on line?

    • Rita,

What software do you use to allow patron accounts (renewals, reserves) online? Does anyone know of a free or cheap application or software that will do this with currently existing software?

I like our current software, but the online catalog allows none of these features, not even availability of items. Any advice is appreciated!

      Laura

    • Dear Rita,

We are not on facebook, I don't have a clue as to how to renew on line or reserve media on line.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

      Thanks!

      Janet.

  • You could have a church library Facebook page. I post things of interest as I have time. You could also have someone do a Kindle/Ipad demo.

    • Carol,

I'll check into both ideas when I get a chance.

      Thanks again!

      Janet.
