How do I catalog and display music CDs?

Our library has been given a large collection of music CDs including several different genres. We have not handled this item before. I would like to hear how others catalog and display music CDs. Any other tips on music library techniques would be most welcome, too.

  • We treat ours by subject as in genre and artist and any specific subjects which might apply. We do ours by numerical order and have a room with CD size shelves. The card catalog allows one to find what they are looking for and they just go into the room and pull the CD they want.

We do labels just like books on them and of course mark them with the caution stickers, etc.

  • This is what I do using Concourse.

The title is taken from the disc. I add [sound recording (CD)]. If the container title differs from the disc title, I enter that as a T-Analysis entry. Also, if the title has a number, I add the title with the number spelled out, to help if someone searches like that.

Under notes I enter "Contents:" followed by the title of each selection on the disc. Join each title by space two dashes space. Use a period after the last title. I follow the general upper/lower case rule for titles. Sometimes, if available, I add the time in parentheses following the title formatted as mm:ss. For multiple discs I would use Contents Disc 1: etc. and use a back slash between the entries for the discs.

I enter the performers under the Artist entry, using the normal order.

The technical description is entered something like this:

    1 optical disc (35:45 min.) : stereo ; 12 cm.
Note the first separator is a colon; the second, semicolon. I use cm., but I think everyone else uses 4 ¾ in. I do not use the Dimen. field.

I’m interested to see other answers. Maybe someone will comment on classification.
