DVD

We have purged our CD collection, but hesitated letting go of all DVDs. We wanted to determine if there was any demand for them.
Not one has been checked out since then!
I'm wondering if other smaller libraries are keeping these, are they being checked out? Is it a matter of promotion or is it out-dated technology?

  • We have cleaned out most of our CDs.  I left some praise, gospel, hymns, classical and all the Christmas....timeless music. Nothing "popular". People just stream those.  We also have about 40 sets of Adv in Odyssey CDs that are well used along with other children sing alongs and Veggie Tales.   Almost all our CDs were donations.

We are always adding DVDs.  About half are bought, half donated.  They are all arranged on slanting shelves face out so cover can be seen, overlapping at an angle. We have Adult and Family non fiction and fiction, Children's fiction about half are series...Veggie Tales, Hermie, 321Penguins etc. We have most of the Lamplighter and Animated Heros. Then we have shelves of Children's OT and NT topic DVDs and a shelf of Easter and Christmas themed DVDs.  I would say we have close to 200.  About 15-30 go out per week average, more in winter, lower in summer.  Sunday school teachers and youth group leaders use them and ask for certain ones throughout year to be set aside as needed.  I just ordered a new one as asked for by one of the leaders for his end of year party.

All my new items go to display areas seen upon entry to Library.  New Adult F and NF.  New DVDs. New Kids.  I have some folks that want to immediately see what is new and love when new series are added.

    • I doubled checked my DVDs...it is the Torchlight series, not Lamplight.  Just to be clear.

  • Children's dvd's are checked out regularly. Can't say the same for other topics.

  • We also purged all our CDs but the DVDs still go out - although not as frequently as 5 years ago. The children's DVDs are most popular. I'm in the process of adding 20 more DVDs that we've had waiting but am not sure about buying more. Will see what happens with these new additions before getting anymore. In some ways streaming is easier but the "deciding what to watch" when streaming is harder than just grabbing something off the rack at church. We are going to put some effort into promoting the new DVDs in the hopes that will increase use.

  • Our DVDs are very popular and I'm hoping to add more to our collection.

  • We have 142 DVDs and no CDs. I often wonder if I should remove them, but just recently 2 DVDs were checked out. So, I'll keep them. I have them in a small turnable stand and it's not really taking up much space. We have some great DVDs and it's a shame they are not being watched. I realize people stream movies now, but in my experience a lot of these DVDs are not on streaming platforms or are available for a price. But, if you don't have a DVD player anymore...Oh well, times are changing!

  • We have a moderate sized church library.  We do have DVDs, but not CDs.  One church member who is a frequent user of the library.  He checks out DVDs frequently, so seems to meet a need there.
