DVD display shelves

We presently house our DVD collection on shelves on a wallboard. They must be flipped one by one to see behind the stack. We are thinking turntable shelving would make the DVDs more accessible. Would be interested in hearing what works well for you and where you acquired them. (purchased or made in house)

  • We purchased 2 round metal turnable shelves from The Library Store several years ago.  I looked in the new catalog and they are no longer listed.  The turnable metal shelves are great for kids and adults, but when they get full it is difficult to shelve returned DVD's in the right order.  Since our collection has increased we have put the adult DVD's on the shelf like books, which is much easier to put returned items in the right order.
    • I appreciate your answer. It is so nice to get other's opinions. It seems like most are recommending the regular shelves. Thanks for your response. Almyra
  • We use regular book shelves.  We had boards stained to match the shelves and placed behind the DVD's to make them fit the shelf without sliding behind.  You can look at them exactly as you would a book.  They are processed with the Dewey so are easily tracked on the shelf.

    • Thanks for the reply and info. In additon to your reply and the above one from Sandra, I searched the photos on Church Librarians. It seems this is the most popular answer to shelving DVDs, and probably more space effective, too. Thanks again for your input. Almyra
  • Hi, Almyra,

The turntable might work well if you have a somewhere convenient to place it. We put our DVDs on a regular book shelf.  We have placed a narrow board the length of the shelf behind the DVD cases to keep them from sliding back and getting "lost" and we have also used a spring curtain rod behind the DVD cases.  The narrow board works better. Somehow, some gremlins get in the library sometimes and push the books and other items to the back of the shelves and the spring rod will move too -- the board will not! It must be a lot of fun to push all those books backwards!

Hope to see you at FBC, Clinton, MS in a couple of weeks at the Mississippi conference!

    • Thanks for your reply, Sandra. Like the idea of the board and curtain rod on the shelf. We have a man that could probably build us some shelves to even fit the DVDs. It may be he could attach them eye-level to the wall boards we now have. We are short on space, and that may also be the cheaper way to go, too. Appreciate your input. We were looking forward to attending the conference, but sorry to say we have had a conflict. We are hoping to be able to make it next year. Know it will be a great one. We'll be thinking of you all.
