Catalog Children's Books

When we first started our library, we didn't have very many children's books, so they were lumped all together.  Now that we have grown, I am ready to catalog them correctly.  I also have a section for youth.  I understand the  C classification for for books for ages 0-7,  usiing E for preschool books, and J for ages 8-11.  But it doesn't seem right to put books for ages 12 to high school (the "tweens") in with the youth books since there are so many books just for this age group.  What are all you guys doing, and do you have any suggestions for making a seperate section for this age group?  Thanks for any help offered!

  • I forgot to mention that we do designate all youth books with the Y just as we do the children with the C and the juvenile with the J.

      • We also have the ages 13 -19 designated with a Y.  This works really well with our library.  Older teens may still check out of the adult section, but the Y is where they will find books with subjects that are especially geared to them.

  • We have a Youth  or Y section for ages 13-18. We actually do get our youth into the library and they are using their SEECTION.
  • We've been putting them with the adult books, but adding a sticker on the spine that says "youth".  This way none of the more advanced reading J readers will accidentally come across something with a more "teenage" theme...like suicide, teen drinking, etc.

    • We also shelve books for teen readers with the adult books.  We add a blue dot sticker just below the spine label to signify "of interest to youth."  Sonya pointed out one good reason.  Other reasons are that no self-respecting teenager will go browsing in the juvenile books, and we have no space for a separate teen section.  Besides, most of the teens' searches require books already cataloged in the adult section.
