Book Club - one book??

OK, so my pastor has asked me to start a book club. He has selected What's So Amazing About Grace? by Philip Yancey.

It's a great book. However, I can't wrap my brain around a book club meeting in which everyone will need to provide their own copy of the book.

I've looked up all sorts of things about forming a book club, but I'm not sure how this will go. Do people not mind having to buy their own copies?

Seems to me if the point of the book club is to increase circulation, how does this work???

Any feedback?

Thanks so much.

P.S. I've never participated in or conducted a book club.  (Never been my cup of tea)

  • Our book club has 20 members, we buy our own books, I always put a copy in the library.  We read the book at our weekly meetings, each person reading about five pages.  It takes a while to "read" the book but this really enhances our understanding of the book content and we actively discuss as the reading triggers our questions and comments.  We do not use set questions they arise naturally as we read together.

We have been sharing books and DVDs for ten years now and have a wonderful time discovering together.  What's so Amazing About Grace? is a good book to start with.  The point of our group is to search and learn and grow in our own faith and to learn about other faiths too.

I never looked at the group as increasing circulation but each week there is a book, or two, that  I recommend that adds to our understanding of the book.  So yes, in that way it has increased borrowing.

Because it takes a month or more to finish a book we do not have to each put out a lot of money. I find that buying on the internet (Amazon) books cost less and shipping is free over $25.00.

For myself leading this group has been a wonderful experience.
