Archaeology VBS display

I was asked to host a library display during our VBS week. Our theme is archaeology/how we got the Bible. This station will be an optional stop for the classes. I am looking for ideas of books for different ages & anything creative you can think of. I also want to have some library/church info available for parents that might stop by.

Thanks,

Carol

  • By your phrase "optional stop" I'm thinking you want to set up a visual and/or hands-on display/activity. What about a scroll-making area? Maybe you could find a computer font with "Hebrew" looking letters and create some very lightly inked Bible verses on full or half-sized sheets of paper that the kids could then use a black or brown marker to trace over the lettering and create their own scroll. Small dowels, sticks or even popsicle sticks might be glued on for the ends. You might want to talk about the parchment creating process briefly (parchment lasted much longer than papyrus scrolls, but required the hide of an animal) and dress up like a scribe. Pictures or cut-outs of caves, jars, a goat herder and goat(s), and perhaps a map might make an effective bulletin board (Dead Sea Scrolls tie-in, if applicable).
  • The Zondervan Visual Reference three-book series (c2008) is a great resource for the archaeology theme. Titles are How we got the Bible; Amazing discoveries that unlock the Bible & Incredible mysteries of the Bible.  As the series title indicates, these books are beautifully illustrated.

     The Holman Book of Biblical charts, maps and reconstruction (BroadmanHolman, c1993) would be good as well as The Biblical Illustrator, a quarterly publication from LifeWay which includes archaeological & background information relating to current Bible Study curriculum from LifeWay;

    Kid Atlas (Zonderkidz, c2002) and other atlases;

    Faith Lessons by Ray Vander Laan, a series of 12 video sets (available from CBD on DVD). Lessons are  Bible studies filmed in Israel and Turkey where Bible events took place.

    For the younger groups, you might have children's books on Bible animals, plants, etc.

    This sounds really exciting! Keep us updated on your progress!
