Recap of Southern CA ECLA meeting 8-21-10 (CA Evangelical Church Libraries group)

26 people attended the Aug. 21 "fall" meeting for the Southern CA chapter of ECLA.
We met at the Granada Heights Friends Church in La Mirada.

For photos, please see the "CA Evangelical Church Library Mtg" album in the Photos section of this web site.

Virgette Andrus from Demco led a two-hour training workshop on book repair. We learned a lot, and had fun winning some great door prizes.
After a tasty lunch, we had a short business meeting. New officers were elected, and plans for 2011 outreach to churches in southern California were discussed.

Our next meeting will be in March, 2011, at another great church library in southern California.

If you are interested in getting involved with our group, please contact me. We'd love to have you join us!

Just talked to Alice Hodges at DEMCO. There are only 3 people who do book repair workshops. 2 are in Wisconsin and 1 is in Southern CA. She said there is no one who could do a book repair workshop in NC. Ms. Hodges is sending me a copy of the DVD and has suggested that I conduct a workshop using that.

You're absolutely right, Deanna. The best way to learn is to actually get your hands on it and do it yourself, along with some instruction. Thank you for sharing about the Demco repair DVD. It's good to know that that resource is available.

Hi, Ann,
The best information I received was the Hands-On part of it - actually practicing repairing hardback books (we each brought a discarded book to tear apart and then fix). She would walk around and help us if the book or pages were not cooperating!
If you don't want to bring in a speaker, you can also buy Demco's DVD which shows each type of repair and the materials; it would be the next best thing.

Deanna, would you please share some of the best tips on book repair that you learned at the workshop. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Lynda,

Our event coordinator, Joanne Ladewig (she's on this ning as well), arranged it. Virgette is the Territory Manager for southern California.
I thought it was very reasonable - about $9 per person, which paid for the presentation, a kit, a chance at some door prizes, and a promo code which gives you a discount on your next order!

How did you get someone from Demco? Just ask? Was their cost reasonable? I never thought about asking someone from there. We bought our shelving for our new library from them.
