Greetings!

What do I need to get my library automated? I have a computer and a monitor. That's it. I would love to have it totally automated and would appreciate any input.

Thanks!

Hi Bonnie,

Public libraries are the best source for any kind of books, etc.  You can reserve the book and have it send to the library that is closest to you.  You will get an email when it is ready to pick up.  (This is how it is in Houston, TX)  You can also go to WorldCat and if you want something you can get it through Interlibrary Loan.

Instead of attempting to have books at the church, I think it would be best to teach parishioners how to use the public library.  It can do a much better job than any church.  This was not so before computer and the Internet.  You tax dollars pay for the public library and you may as well use it.

As for automating your library system, you might try putting it in the cloud.  That way people can access it from any Internet connection.

Here is the beggining of an online library of church records.  This is not what you were asking about but it might give you some ideas.  http://archive.org/search.php?query=Oaks.Christian.Church.Houston

Bonnie, without seeing your post on automation information, I did mention it in response to Dewey Classification system.  However, without checking had forgotten that another program has been added to the list of automation companies--Surpass CL.  Hey, you've got the tools to get started!  You will be amazed at how much time you will save--and no more catalog cards to print and file!

Bonnie, look in the right hand column at the "Sponsors" that are listed for the CLN website.  There are three automation companies. You can click through to their company websites and ask for information on each automation system.

Our church library uses Concourse which is a Book Systems product. We have used this very user-friendly product for almost 20 years.

All of the companies represented are very church library oriented and will work with you to find something that will meet the needs for your size library.
