Church Library Ministry Vision Statement

Donna Duncan from First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia recently joined the CLN. She shared their need to develop a vision statement that will help them serve their 21st Century church. One of our realizations in recent years has been the importance of our church libraries connecting in strategic ways to the vision statements of our churches. Let’s start a discussion on how our library teams have done that. Would you share how you did that and how you use this vision of where your…

Summer Reading Update

Our Summer Reading program has come to an end and I thought I'd give you an update on how it went.

Overall, we were very happy with how it went.  Not all of the 75 people who signed up actually participated, but this was probably a good thing, as we were VERY busy and I can barely imagine what it would have been like if they had all been doing it.  Here are some things that happened:

1. Our circulation more than doubled during the program.  We used to have about 200…

DVD Storage

Rose Newcomb, First Baptist Church, Cami, IL sent in the following:

Our church library purchased one of the tall DVD spinner type storage units a couple years ago.  When it was assembled, we didn't think it was stable enough to stand alone in the library.  One of the  librarian's husband, Tom Smith, figured out a way to attach it to the wall.

Tom just attached another spinner like the one that was on the bottom to the top and attached the storage unit to the…

Read Around the Library

We played on the VBS theme used maps to decorate the idea being that they read out of each 'group' (fiction, 100s, 200s,...) with a round prize for each (glo-stick, pencil,  ball...) and they put a sticker on a world map for each book Both our regular church kids and the day-care kids are enjoying I did not even think about asking the adults to join us

Summer Reading Program at our church

We developed a summer reading program we're calling Berean's (name of our church) Book Bingo.

We have three groups - Beginner (3-gr. 2), Intermediate (gr. 3-6) and Teen (gr. 6-12).  I made a different Bingo card for each group; the first two have 25 squares and the Teen card has 20.  In each square three there is a  different genre or category of book, for example for the Beginner one it includes, among others, Animal story, Bible story, Easy Reader, Author A-D,  etc. The others…

Extending church library beyond church membership

Our church has over 300 pre-schoolers and Mother's Day Out children enrolled in its weekly programs. A great percentage are non church members. Our Media Center schedules these classes twice weekly for story time. At the New Parents meeting each fall the teachers inform these parents of our reading program and the parents are invited to visit our library and meet us and see our facility. They are amazed to find such an outstanding, convenient media center for their use. We provide applications… Continue

Caldecott winner - Heads up on content

If you have a school library or a kids' section in your church library, please do not assume that this year's winning Caldecott book is appropriate for your collection. Although it has won various awards, the content has language and content issues that make it unsuitable for church-related children's collections. The title of the Caldecott winning book is "This One Summer"  by Jillian Tamaki.

Easy Bulletin Boards

We have a 2'x3' bulletin board outside our library door that I use for promoting our monthly themes. Instead of having to wrestle with rolls of background paper and a stapler, I put my display together on my scrapbooking table and then hang it. I use colored poster board for my background. It is the perfect width and leaves 6" of space at the top where I have posted our library hours and checkout periods. Poster board is easier to work with, and stores easily to be reused. I add my border,…

Developing a Book Donation Program

Some years ago I wrote an article about securing book donations for our 55 prison libraries in Michigan, then published it in the library magazine, Against the Grain. Recently I have found the article is in an archive from which one can download the full article PDF.

For some churches just getting started with a library, and those needing to expand, the ideas here could be useful. I won't re-enter the…
