Help from an old guy

As a former Special librarian and retired now for about 22 years and still going, I've helped many libraries start-up or reorganize; Corporate, Public, Academic, State Prison, Churches, and Rare auto collection and an auto museum.

The last several years I've had to bow out of singing in choir, playing timpani and jazz drums in ensembles, and given up most of my Professional memberships. This; the result of cancer treatments.

However I'm still editing two publications,…

Has anyone bought tablets that could be checked out? We have several who have a hard time reading either because  of their eyes or holding a book so I was considering buying a couple. How did you handle them

International Day in the library

Every November our church has an International Mission emphasis week. Our WMU and children’s mission groups lead the church in learning about missionaries in certain areas around the world. Our library staff decided this year we would not only support this church wide emphasis with resources, but with a hands-on International Day event in the library. In September, we started asking for volunteers who had lived in, visited, or been on a mission trip to…

Growing in Faith 2020 Reading Challenge

We do a summer reading program each year, and also usually an adult reading challenge for adults during the winter months.  It's usually 7 weeks or so, with the goal to read as many of the 16 genres we put on a bookmark as possible and we give prizes to those who read the most.

This year we're changing it a bit - it will last all year, and the goal is not so much to read the most (although we think we might give prizes) but to plan for spiritual growth and read books all year…

Yearly Devotional Exchange

I mentioned this in a previous post regarding an abundance of Devotionals and what to do with them.  Thought it would be a good idea to post here as this works well at our church.  We have an annual devotional exchange which takes place on the last Sunday in December and the first Sunday of January.  All of our existing devotionals are put on tables in the foyer on the last Sunday of the year.  Our members are encouraged to bring in their used devotionals and get new ones.  Over the two…

Read the Bible Through Ideas

Carolyn Walker shared how her church encourages people to read the Bible through each year. Click here to read her article. How about your church? How does your church's library support an emphasis on reading the Bible?

Library Extension Web browser add-on

Do you all know about Library Extension? You add it to your browser(s), and when you are on Amazon or another book seller site, it lets you know whether the book you are looking at is available at your public library! If your library isn't listed, just let them know, and they can add the library to their list. It's a nice feature that saves you $$ when you are thinking about purchasing a book.…

Blue Valley Baptist Church, Olathe, KS

Fay Hudnall is leader of the Blue Valley church library which has two locations—their main campus and their Ridgeview campus. She asked me to post their story.

After losing every item in our Ridgeview campus church library due to water line breaks across the hall and above the library, the Ridgeview campus library of Blue Valley…

VBS & Summer Reading Club 2019

Each year WBC Library tries to go along with the theme of VBS.  VBS theme this year was the popular In The Wild by Lifeway.  That was easy....the theme for our Summer Reading Club 2019 is Wild about Reading!  We purchased a truck photo stand-up & door banner to promote sign-up for the SRC.  Afterwards we gave these items to VBS Director for their decorations.  After our VBS week, decorations were given to another church in our area.

Will post pictures.  We have permission…

Forty Years And Growing

Our church library was started, I believe, about 40 years ago.  At the time it consisted of just a few shelves.  About 36 years ago, it was taken over by a dedicated lady in our church who grew the library to thousands of items and a good circulation.  When a new sanctuary was built, she was able to have a space for the library added right near one of the exits, just steps away from the sanctuary and that visibility has been such a boon for us.

Six and a half years ago, I was…

A Church Library Currently in Transition

Back in January (2019) our pastor and staff started the process of assessing all the ministries of our church as to how each on aligns to the mission, vision, core values, and discipleship process of our church. They determined that our library ministry needed to move in the same direction our church family is going.

On March 27th, I officially became the library team…

Help with Signage words

We are relocating our slatboards from inside the church library to the hallway just outside the library. The slatboards hold many counseling booklets, , biblical related brochures/pamphlets  etc that are free to take. I maintain an ongoing max/min on the items. Just wondering if anyone had some ideas as to what signage I might post above the slatboards to clearly identify it's purpose in no more than 3 or 4 words?
