"Ugh - the problem with adult fiction for that age is that it's either going to be too gruesome or have romance in it or both. He might enjoy the Bug Man mysteries by Tim Downs, if his parents are okay with him reading books for adults.…"

"We do it as follows: Fiction on CD, say a book by Terri Blackstock:  CD BLA Non-fiction on CD, say a book by McArthur: NONF CD MCA That's it.  The CD lets you know, in perusing the catalog, that's it is on Audio rather than a…"

Debbie Dehart replied to the discussion 'Books to be shelved'
"We generally do not add non-fiction books by authors with whom we have strong doctrinal differences (Joel Osteen is a good example) but  don’t usually carry it over into the fiction area."

Debbie Dehart replied to the discussion 'overdue problem'
"We have a lot of overdues and some are from six months or more ago.  We don't bill or use fines; if a very long time has gone by, we tend to mark the book "missing", or remove it from the catalog, or replace it. I find it…"

Debbie Dehart replied to the discussion 'How to classify "Creation" in adult nonfiction?'
"My thought is that you could and perhaps should go ahead and put them under the same number.  After all, who's to know that "technically" they belong elsewhere? Your goal is to make things easy to find for your users, and having…"

Debbie Dehart replied to the discussion 'Books to be shelved'
"Yes, we have had similar issues with readers complaining about one thing or another in a book. One of our "solutions" is a small spine label we created that says 16+ on it. This is an indicator that there is adult content in the book,…"

Debbie Dehart replied to the discussion 'Books to be shelved'
"We use purchased labels for Classics (from Demco) and created our own Good Reads labels. We also have a framed explanation in our library of what these labels indicate and why we have added these books to our collection."

Debbie Dehart replied to the discussion 'Picture books - how to catalogue'
"When we took over our library, that is how it was done.  But i found it to be cumbersome and unnecessary for our needs. I can see some advantages but I am still happier with the designation we use now."

Debbie Dehart replied to the discussion 'Books to be shelved'
"For the past three or four years, we have been building up a collection of what we call Classics and Good Reads.  We have arbitrarily determined "classic" to be a (not-necessarily-Christian book published before 1960) and Good Reads,…"

Book Clubs

Here is a article I wrote from our current church library newsletter.

Book Clubs

Many people who love to read also love to discuss the books they’ve read with others.  It’s even better if this discussion takes place with someone else who read the same book; and while it is especially fun if you both loved the book, there is also something to be said for…

Winter Reading Challenge

At our church we're doing a Reading Challenge for adults - we're handing out bookmarks with sixteen categories of books, and participants have from Jan. 31-March 6 to read as many as they can (or want to! it's supposed to be fun, not pressure). We will give out coupons for signing up and for every book they read, and if we have some real over-achievers, we'll decide towards the end of February what kinds of other prizes we'll give out.

Here are our 16 categories...

Summer Reading Update

Our Summer Reading program has come to an end and I thought I'd give you an update on how it went.

Overall, we were very happy with how it went.  Not all of the 75 people who signed up actually participated, but this was probably a good thing, as we were VERY busy and I can barely imagine what it would have been like if they had all been doing it.  Here are some things that happened:

1. Our circulation more than doubled during the program.  We used to have about 200…

Summer Reading Program at our church

We developed a summer reading program we're calling Berean's (name of our church) Book Bingo.

We have three groups - Beginner (3-gr. 2), Intermediate (gr. 3-6) and Teen (gr. 6-12).  I made a different Bingo card for each group; the first two have 25 squares and the Teen card has 20.  In each square three there is a  different genre or category of book, for example for the Beginner one it includes, among others, Animal story, Bible story, Easy Reader, Author A-D,  etc. The others…
