International Day in the library

Every November our church has an International Mission emphasis week. Our WMU and children’s mission groups lead the church in learning about missionaries in certain areas around the world. Our library staff decided this year we would not only support this church wide emphasis with resources, but with a hands-on International Day event in the library. In September, we started asking for volunteers who had lived in, visited, or been on a mission trip to a country outside of the United States who would be interested in hosting a table for International Day. Our staff made a handout with instructions, guidelines and suggestions for the tables. We included what the library would provide, how we could help each volunteer find what they needed for their displays, dates and timelines. Each table represented a country and the volunteer host was to bring items from the country to display and share, such as pictures, maps, flag, language, games, craft to make, food to taste, clothing, etc. We had eight countries represented. The library had a book table display of country books, a world map and a globe. We held our event on a Saturday afternoon, and every host wanted to leave the tables up so people would have the opportunity to visit the displays on Sunday. The event was well attended and we were asked to host this event again next year.
