For the first time, I experienced the first session of VBS that took place in our Sanctuary. I did my best with all the songs and motions. Even though I am horrible at keeping up with the hand motions, many of those kids saw one of the librarians participating with them.
I had a very productive first day of VBS today (June 15). I got there early to make sure the right books related to the VBS theme were in the display for the kids. I am still looking for a book that has a cover that ilumminates in the dark. It is not checked out. While reading the shelves I found several books in the wrong places. Never did find the book I was looking for, but I did fix the shelves.
Another good use of the time was reading our shelves for books that showed overdue by one of our best customers. I was pleased to find all of them on the shelves even though they missed being checked in when returned. Lesson learned: improve our circulation process.
Also enjoyed several conversations with people who normally don't get to drop by the library. Can't wait to see what happens in the library tomorrow!

We had a GREAT surprise at the end of VBS last Friday. One of our guest families who brought their children to our VBS all week which was their first time to participate in our church. They entered the Enrichment Center Library as they were leaving at the end of VBS. I greeted them as we met near the door. I gave them a brief tour of the library including where to find books for their 2 boys with her. They have 8 children. The older ones came to VBS. The Mom and 2 sons got all in to searching the shelves. They checked out 10 books. The Mom gave me their address and names. I am setting up their accounts today. Her boys loved the idea of having their own accounts. She thanked me for allowing non-members to use the library.
I found the book I've been searching for! The title is The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness by Dan DeWitt. Love the way the cover iluminates in the dark. Can't wait to put it in the display this morning.

I was thrilled to find the following in my email last night. It was in an email to VBS parents and leaders reporting on yesterday and announcements for today. I did not have to ask for them to do this.
We will have children’s books displayed in the enrichment center that go along with our theme and main point of each day of VBS. The Enrichment Center will be open all week and families are welcome to stop by and check out books to continue the conversation of what’s learned at VBS, at home.
I think I'll put all of our books about Jesus for preschoolers and children near the door since our main display is covered with VBS decorations. I was thrilled when the leader of the baby room checked out 3 books related to the theme. These teachers are reading to our babies!
I had a special occurrence this morning on our first day of VBS.
In all the noise and chaos of First Day check-in, I noticed a young elementary girl who looked teary and reticent to move into the sanctuary for the beginning worship time. I offered to let her come in the library and we would work on our Snoopy puzzle until she felt better. It was blessedly quiet in the library, and we worked on the puzzle and chatted. After a while, I got the Children's Minister's attention, and she helped my new friend to join her group. Saw her later and she was having fun.
I had the strongest assurance that God had guided me not only to try a new thing by getting a puzzle but also that I chose a Snoopy puzzle that appeals to all ages and that it was only 300 pieces so it fits younger as well as older ages.
