We have a few of Max Lucado. I'm looking at others comments. We have a lot of old books that need replacing.
IDK, I didn't grow up with much, and now I'm old. I read The Sugar Creek Gang and Nurse Cherry from the church library. I understand the family of the original author of the Sugar Creek Gang have updated the books for more modern reading.
As a youth, I loved many Gilbert Morris books, but I don't know how well they have held up over the years.
We have a particularly popular series of Bible stories that I would classify as picture books. The series is called "Tales that Tell the Truth" and comes from England. However, they are readily available on Amazon for shipping to the US. Here's a link:

My personal favorite book in the series is The God Contest...which is the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal.
There is a series by Paul Gully that is good.
