Is there a suggested ratio of fiction to non-fiction in the church library? 1 Reply

Recently on the LINC list this was asked.  Based on the amount of fiction checked out versus the non-fiction, and the shelf space allotted to fiction, I was sure I knew we had way more fiction…Continue

Hi everyone! The conference was a sucess, though I did not see all of it. You can now follow ECLA on Facebook and Flicker! Visit us there as we will be phasing this blog out over time.

Debra,

Just received the latest edition of Church Libraries (Winter 2010-11) and was delighted to see a current summary of library automation products - thanks for putting together that info for us.

I noticed on page 3 that there is a contact for people who are interested in starting a new chapter for folks who want to get together more often than just for the fall conference. What a great idea!

I have been an active member of the Southern California chapter for about ten years, and we have an active participation of at least fifteen and often as many as 30 church librarians and assistants at each meeting (spring and summer/fall) - great times of fellowship & peer mentoring!

I encourage any church librarians who need a group to grow with to consider starting a chapter in their state. I would love to see an article on that topic in Church Libraries. Start with two or three folks and build from there. Our chapter was started by EV Free members but we do not limit our membership denominationally - any Christian librarian or assistant is welcome in our chapter if they agree to the basic doctrinal statements of ECLA.

We have also been requested to do three sessions at CMTA (formerly the GLASS convention) in Pasadena this spring to encourage and assist churches that want to start a library/resource ministry. Our ministry continues to grow!

If you are in the Southern California area, our next chapter meeting will be Saturday, August 21. We'll be having a professional-level book repair training workshop, with kits and instruction from the local Demco rep in the morning, then lunch fellowship, then our fall meeting. You are welcome to join us, but space is limited and you MUST register in advance. More details are posted by our current president, Deanna King, on the main ning page under the heading Church Library Ministry Events, near the bottom of the page. Do plan to join us!

We have an active chapter of ECLA that meets at alternating churches in the southern California area. If you know of any church librarians or someone interested in starting a church library in our area, please email me at library@cypresschurch.net and I will relay the meeting info for March 2010 to you. Our group has men and women members and has been meeting for over ten years. We have 2 or 3 meetings a year and usually tour a church library each meeting or have an author speak. Our most recent event was a luncheon with 19 (!)Christian authors, attended by 150 people from more than 55 churches!

Our next meeting we will be touring TWO church libraries including one with a large ministry to homeschooling families. We are an official chapter of ECLA but our meetings and membership are open to any Christian believer/librarian who agrees with the basic Christian doctrinal statement of faith of ECLA.
